Most retail charts only categorize by boat length, completely ignoring cabin height (windage area) and displacement weight. A 34-foot flybridge sedan cruiser creates nearly twice the aerodynamic drag of a 34-foot sailboat or center console in 40-knot winds. Furthermore, during heavy chop, boat surge inertia shock-loads the ground tackle. Sizing with ABYC H-40 windage calculations prevents dragging when squalls strike at 3:00 AM.
G4 (Grade 43 High-Test) chain has a significantly higher Working Load Limit (WLL) and breaking strength than BBB (Grade 30) chain of the exact same link thickness. For example, 5/16-inch G4 chain has a WLL of 3,900 lbs, whereas 5/16-inch BBB is rated at only 1,900 lbs. Additionally, windlass gypsies are machined to precise tolerances and are strictly calibrated to either G4 or BBB link pitchβthey cannot be interchanged without jamming.
No! Never use the electric windlass motor to break a buried anchor free from heavy mud or rock. Doing so overloads the motor gearbox, slips the internal clutch, or shears drive pins. Always secure the chain rode to a heavy bow cleat or chain stopper, motor the boat slowly forward over the anchor to trip the shank, and then engage the windlass solely to retrieve the loose rode.
